Diabetic Neuropathy is nerve damage that is a consequence of the disease of diabetes. There are a large variety of neuropathies out there (ways that your nervous system can be damaged), but diabetes is a big contributor. And the longer you live with diabetes, the more likely you will have problems with nerve damage. When called Diabetic Neuropathy, it means that the damage is probably caused by excess glucose in the blood or by the lower levels of oxygen in the blood due to elevated glucose levels.

Other Causes of Neuropathy

There are other causes of neuropathy besides diabetes. A person could experience any one or all of these issues or a combination of the different nerve damaging situations. Here are some things that have been related to nerve damage(neuropathy):

  • smoking or alcohol use
  • physical injury to the nerves from trauma or overuse
  • autoimmune factors that causes inflammation of the nerves
  • abnormal blood fat levels
  • heredity
